The sky is clear, there's not a cloud to be seen. The air is warm, not yet saturated with the chill of autumn wind. All in all, a good day to have forked out the funds for a little trip into the safari zone. Not Fern's typical haunt by a long shot (they're more apt to be found sneaking around the ominous paths of mt. pyre.)[break][break]

If anything, it's a good excuse to work on bonding with the flapple who recently joined his party. Not that she's been that difficult--sweet as her namesake, Honeycrisp flutters from the confines of her pokeball in a frantic batting of apple rind wings. She perches on Fern's shoulder and they set off further along the path as they reach up to scratch under her little chin.[break][break]

they don't have to wait long before a small pokemon tumbles into their path. "alright honey, hop to!" they chime, and the flapple drifts up into the air reluctantly from where she'd curled comfortably around the back of fern's neck. "your moveset is new to me, but let's give it a go, yeah?"[break][break]

the treeko, sensing the sudden threat, shoots a swirl of leaves up toward honeycrisp, but the higher she floats, the more she evades getting swept in the leafy torrent. "think that's about high enough!" their flapple acquiesces, and produces a particularly sturdy piece of fruit. leveling herself above the treeko peering upward, she lets it drop and the heavy momentum of the GRAV APPLE is enough to knock the treeko out as the apple konks it smack on the top of its head.[break][break]

“Excellent job!” they praised the little dragon as it drifted back down toward toward them. The treeko remained thoroughly knocked and snoozing, the apple strewn within reach. Well, it might have a little lump on its head later, but at least it would have a snack upon awakening? That was a good consolation, yes?[break][break]

Fern carried onward, arm extending out, palm up, in an offering for more celebratory chin scritches as his flapple trilled—obviously pleased with the praise received. The flash of exceptionally shimmery feathers caught their eye, though, and curiosity turned into interest when the pale torchic hopped free of some brush. Fern clicked their tongue and the flapple moved into action again, shooting up into the air, and then divebombing the tiny bird with FLY. Unlike the last, though, a safari ball followed shortly after.

“Starting to feel old hat to you now, honeycrisp?” they tease the little dragon who twirls in the air and resettles on Fern’s shoulder…only to take off again once the succession of small Pokémon continues. No wonder there are several trainers out and about the safari zone today—it feels like they can’t take more than a few steps before something new is popping out of the bushes to intercept their path. This time: a mudkip. It’s a cute little thing, and Fern nearly considers gathering it up in his arms to carry on, but alas, he’s only got a limited supply of inventory.[break][break]

He doesn’t need to command his flapple this time— she rallies to action with a simple clap of his hands. Her mouth opens, and honeycrisp releases the bright beam of dragon pulse, then shifts and releases another small blast of the shock wave when the mudkip bounces out of the path of the first. The second time around, it’s not so lucky—immediately stunned by the shock to its system.

it feels as if they’re being watched now, doesn’t it? Fern frowns, glancing around but there is no one actively staring. Then their flapple trills and they watch as it flutters toward a stump—a wild bagon peering out from behind it. Hm. Rather than engage this one in battle, Fern rummages in the pocket of his bag, producing an apple they’d saved for themselves later. Did bagons even like fruit? He’s not sure, but he still treads closer, and the bagon ducks away only to re-emerge a moment later when Fern stoops down to its level.[break][break]

“You’re gonna come with me. That peachy, buddy? The bagon, wanting what is being offered, creeps closer to take the apple. It must not be as appealing as it thought, because it states down at the apple with a tilt of its head. Fern chances giving it a little pat on the head before activating one of the safari balls.

As much as Fern prefers his pokemon scaly and/or spectral, even they cannot resist the warm, honey brown eyes of the eevee when it tumbles into their path. Pocketing the bagon they’ve just acquired, Fern allows Honeycrisp a furthered break and lets her resettle on his shoulder, then drape around their neck as they kneel down to the trilling eevee. “Aren’t you a cute little hen?” he coos at her, much to the eevee’s delight. A quick scratch under her chin earns them the response of her soft little head butting into their palm.[break][break]

Then she promptly flops and rolls onto her back, inviting a belly rub. Little back legs kick at Fern’s hand as he obliges, but it’s nothing more than obvious play from the young pokemon. But that settles that, doesn’t it? Once they feel they can succeed without getting nipped or scratched, Fern scoops the eevee up in one arm. She sniffs at Honeycrisp, still curled close on Fern’s shoulder. They will officially snag the eevee in its new ball once they’re closer to the exit.
